Philip Weinrobe’s musical path started at eight years old with a cello, and most recently brought him to an old BOSS SP-303 sampler.

Production and engineering weren’t part of the original plan; Philip fell into them almost by accident. What began as recording bands, and himself, just for fun turned into a career when he met Shahzad Ismaily, who invited him to help build what would become Figure 8 Recording.
“I love EchoBoy for all things delay, chorus, slapback, loops, and color! I use it on every session in multiple ways. I also use Tremolator and PhaseMistress for extra motion in my mixes if I feel things need to undulate a bit. And of course…DECAPITATOR OMG.”
Philip now works out of Saugerties, New York, tucked into the Catskill Mountains on a beautiful 20-acre residential studio property where experimentation is encouraged and creativity feels inevitable.
Here is a lecture Philip gave for SonicScoop’s MixCon 2024, which includes some great real-world uses he has for the Soundtoys plug-ins:
Outside the studio, Philip channels his obsession with detail into dialing in the perfect shot on his manual espresso machine. When he’s not tinkering with extraction times, he’s hanging out with his young daughter and doing his best to convince her that banjos are, in fact, extremely cool.

Philip brings a lifetime of curiosity, craft, and joyful experimentation to every project he touches. He considers himself unbelievably lucky to spend his life making music with artists who inspire and humble him every day.
